Hi Mel,

I thought the simplicity and scale of your piece worked very well. It was both poignant and elegant. I would be more cautious about enlarging the piece to a less intimate scale. I loved that it drew you close, and was about human size.

Advertising has it tropes, which you drew on quite successfully, but it is rarely intimate in feel. You achieved this, which is no small task.

Way to go!

Didn’t people fear photographs when they first appear as well? I am amazed to see how many of you assume that a virtual social network exists independently of a physical one. That is very often not the case. The virtual network often emerge out of the physical one…
These networks get created over time, not in one day…. They take no time….

Wow is right Mel, but on the other hand, 2nd life will of necessity become modeled on 1st life, since there are humans behind it, and commerce involved.

It’s wonderful to think that we could subvert capitalist influences and directives in a virtual world, but since there are REAL dollars at stake, that’s no longer possible.

For 2nd life to be free of corporate controls and interests, everything would have to be FREE. An “open source” community ideology is the only way to reduce commercial interests. 2nd Life is on the Stock Exchange, (I believe) so it must be influenced by money.

All of this leads me to wonder about potential acts of virtual terrorism and viruses as possible responses to this virtual wealth building.

How about yet another new world, FREE LIFE for all?

I agree with you. There is something very disturbing about Second Life which I still am unable to explain – but I feel it. I know that I am very uncomfortable there – I did create two avatars (for convenience) and each time I have ventured into the world with either of them I can never stay longer than 10 minutes tops. I once asked my young nephew who is a big gamer about Second Life, and he said you mean “get a life”? I just find that Second Life is not artificial enough – it feels somewhat threatening. People can make their avatars do and say anything they want…they don’t hold back and this is what I find “creepy”.

I love your post, and am in sync with many comments in it. I have kept a journal since I was 10, and still prefer pen or pencil on paper too. I’m also older than you are, and don’t have, or want, a cell phone.

Je t’ai ajouté à mes RSS (:P Parce que 3moi je sais c’est quoi ) Je vais donc pouvoir suivre au grès du vents tes péripéties Anglophone (read it with a English Toronto accent, if this is exist…) Ne t’en fait pas je suis certain que tu va y devenir accros et puis anyway (yes it’s a english word in a french sentence !! PURELY CANANIAN)tu es obliger HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

For those of you who need translation well… Canada suppose to be a Bilingual country…so have fun learning French has I had and still have to do so with English.
